Hey everyone, I’ve been busy but not too busy to write this quick reaction and appreciation for Sex Education. Season 2 of Sex Education was released a few days ago, I really love this show because it is so relevant, funny and entertaining to watch. First season was released a year ago on Netflix, at first I was hesitant to watch it because I thought it’s just gonna be another high-school-teenage-cliché romance series but it’s not. It’s actually really interesting to watch because of how they manage to portray “taboo” topics in such a funny way, not cringey yet informative. That is why the show was a huge success and now just a year later season 2 was released and what a way to follow up because it is even much better than the first season in so many ways.
A quick overview on what the show is about to those who haven’t watched it yet. It revolves around Otis whose mother is a “sex therapist” and he goes to high school. In a certain time he helped a fellow student with a sexual problem, knowing what he know about the subject because of his mother’s work he gave an advice that somehow resolves the student’s problem. Now, Maeve whom Otis has feelings for found an opportunity to make money out of giving sexual advice to students with problems regarding the topic. Thus, opening up what they call “sex clinic”, they make money out of lack of sex education.
I love this show so much I didn’t expect it to be this good. Every character is different and has a certain charisma that you’ll fall in love to and what I love about it the most is the awareness that they try to convey in a form of not making it awkward for the viewers to watch. Maybe it’s just me but sometimes there’s a certain part of a show where you know they are trying to raise awareness but it’s kind of cringey and cliché to watch. In this show it’s the opposite of that because this show made sure that you got attached to the character first and then that’s where they show the climactic and relevant part where a social awareness is involve, that you’ll feel sympathetic towards the character.
In season 1 there was Eric who is gay and he attended their dance at school and dressing fabulously but his parents disapproves because of what other people might say. I think that scene was the relevant part of the season, it was about self acceptance and self love.
And now in season 2 it’s Aimee, she was assaulted by a man on a bus and she was traumatized that she now skips the bus and walks to school ever since. Women supporting women was shown, a certain discussion between six women character on the show about having their commonalities were being abused by men. It was such a powerful scene where they supported Aimee by joining her to ride the bus again going to school.
I mean this is the type of show to be watched right now, the kind of entertainment that people needs. I never thought sensitive topics can be discussed through a show without the backlash of misinformation and misinterpretation. This is me promoting Sex Education on Netlfix. WATCH IT! NOW!
